HISTORY

First inhabitants on island Mljet were Ilirs from Peljesac. Many forts and graves testify that. Mljet was first time mentioned in 4th century B.C. Inhabitants of Mljet are known for being great seafarers.

In 7th century Croats inhabitated island Mljet. In 1410. island Mljet was under domination of Dubrovnik Republic until 1808. in time of Napoleon. In 1815. it was under domination of the Habsbury Monarchy. After World War II it is part of Croatia which is today independent Republic.

LOCATION AND CLIMATE

Island Mljet (South Dalmatia, Croatia) is located in Croatian region South Dalmatia. It is situated west from south part of Peljesac. Between Mljet and Peljesac is 8 km wide Mljet Canal. Island Mljet is 37 km long and around 3 km wide, with area of 100 km2. Island Mljet is eight largest Croatian island.

Island Mljet is also called Green Island because of rich vegetation. It has: pine woods, oak woods, macchia, flax, clovers, algae... Animals on island Mljet: snakes, birds, hedgehogs, bats, martens, deers... There are no toxic snakes on island Mljet thanks to the Indian mungos.

Babino Polje is the largest place on island Mljet, located in central part of island Mljet. It has many cultural and historical monuments and natural beauties to visit. Babino Polje has around 400 inhabitants.
